Hotel BEAUSiTE Zermatt a jewel in the Matterhorn's crown

Written by Thomas Crauwels

In the heart of a picturesque valley with a dreamy landscape, a historic building stands facing the Matterhorn. An exceptional haven whose elegance pays homage to the grandeur of the Alps. This is the Hotel BEAUSiTE in Zermatt. Its interior architecture, completely redesigned in 2022, has given this complex a new lease of life. Today, it welcomes the most discerning guests to experience memorable moments in a prestigious village. The views from the rooms and suites are exquisite. The Matterhorn rises up in front of visitors like a giant diamond. Let me introduce you to the Hotel BEAUSiTE, its history and the main activities on offer in the village of Zermatt.

BEAUSiTE luxury hotel: construction history

The construction of the Hotel BEAUSiTE is closely linked to the history of Zermatt. During the golden age of mountaineering in the 19th century, the valley attracted visitors from all over the world. The interest in this place is undeniable, as the high mountains have their roots in the heart of this village. So Alexandre Seiler embarked on an ambitious project: the construction of a railroad. Inaugurated in 1891, the railroad line immediately stimulated the interest in Zermatt.

As the mountain village grew, Zermatt began to live at the pace of its visitors. Hotel complexes multiply, gourmet restaurants emerge and souvenir stores open their doors one after the other.

Biel's August Gindraux imagined a hotel that would stand out from the crowd thanks to its prestige. The Belle Époque building came into being in 1907. The hotel's unmistakable feature is its tower. Designed by architect Hans Winkler, it symbolizes the elegance of Zermatt. The complex grew as quickly as the village itself. As the years went by, however, renovation seemed inevitable. So, between 2019 and 2022, BEAUSiTE takes a new turn. During these three years, the building undergoes a colossal overhaul. The interior is modernized in the image of Zermatt. Rooms and suites were made even more comfortable to welcome the most privileged guests. Today, the hotel is owned by two families: the Aufdenblatten and the Julen. Their DNA can be felt in every corner of the building.

We bring the golden age of mountaineering back to life - in bright colors, with joie de vivre, and all with a wink. Because no one wants that coldness and rigidity any more.

The English mountaineering pioneers who conquered the Zermatt mountains in the 19th century inspired me to take up the motif of climbing ropes. These ropes are a reminder of the time when the BEAUSiTE Zermatt was born, linking the men in a roped party and giving them a sense of security.

Claudia Silberschmidt, interior designer and creative director of Atelier Zürich

Following renovation work, the Belle Époque Hotel BEAUSiTE in Zermatt reopened its doors on June 3, 2022. Honoring Switzerland's most beautiful mountains, its interior architecture celebrates dazzling nature in an idyllic frame . The architectural firm Atelier Zürich took over the project to breathe new life into the complex. Known for its mastery of colorful interior design, Atelier Zürich also left its mark on the Hotel Le Grand Bellevue in Gstaad. Strolling through the grounds of the BEAUSiTE hotel in Zermatt, the soothing ambience transports visitors between forests and mountains. The reception and lobby, tinted fir green, take you right to the heart of the Valais forests. Just imagine how the decor honors Alpine culture. On the walls of the hotel, visitors will see numerous climbing ropes. Around the room doors, 3D rope designs adorn the entrances. A symbol of the hotel or of mountaineers, the rope weaves a link between the history of Zermatt, the mountains and the guest.

Within the main building, 49 rooms are decorated in warm tones. Mirroring the golden larch forests of the Valais, the nuances of color resonate with the echo of nature. To satisfy the most discerning desires, the rooms are adorned with high-quality textiles selected from the collections of Mulberry, Christopher Farr and Sonnhaus. Luxury sofas and armchairs come from George Smith. Table lamps are supplied by Ebb & Flow and complemented by bespoke shades.

Let's enter the villa. 18 rooms and suites take you into a completely different atmosphere. Warm colors fade away, giving way to a more sober universe. Grey, white, green: this discreet modernity captures the aura of the Alps. Here, architecture pays homage to the beauty of the Matterhorn. From the rooms, our gaze soars beyond the hotel to the Valais pyramid. Contemplating it in this way overwhelms us with rare and precious emotions. And when the view of the Matterhorn is combined with exceptional architecture, the experience becomes unique and the atmosphere divine.

The BEAUSiTE hotel at the summit gastronomy

In the two restaurants of the BEAUSiTE hotel, the table is set. Sparkling candles, Valais ambiance, haute cuisine. Chef de cuisine Erwin Peters celebrates the grandeur of the Alps with his culinary creations. Local cuisine is the order of the day. A vision without artifice is the basis of his approach. Working with seasonal ingredients becomes his leitmotiv. The BEAUSiTE hotel in Zermatt also has its own cow and pig farm, and sources its dairy products and cheeses from local farmers.

For a traditional charcoal barbecue, The Grill restaurant concocts a cuisine based on meats, fish and vegetables. Accompanied by his team, the chef focuses on honest cooking. Meat is cooked right in front of the customers, on the grill. Erwin Peters accompanies his dishes with a bottle of wine carefully selected by sommelier Luca Marti. The meal is enjoyed in an atypical atmosphere. The red and black tones of the walls plunge you into another world, while the old wrought-iron chandeliers from the 60s crown the decor. A few steps away, the main 3 Seasons restaurant welcomes visitors in a brightly colored atmosphere. Here, seasonal and vegetarian specialties mingle with the aromas of Zermatt. Here, haute cuisine and high mountains share much in common. For both, determination and daring are essential to success. For both, the present moment never seems to end. Then, if the idea of a fondue comes to mind, the chalet with its panoramic view welcomes you for a cheesy meal.

After tasting the gourmet dishes, make your way to the Wine Box. A large chandelier, made from wine bottles from the BEAUSiTE cellars, hangs in the middle of the room. Between the larch-colored walls, a ruby reveals itself. Ripe fruit, soft wood, a hint of spice. Each aroma bursts forth and our taste buds awaken to the charm of the Matterhorn. Then discover the Bar & Terrace for cocktails, alpine spirits, drinks and snacks in a lively atmosphere.

Spa at the BEAUSiTE Zermatt hotel: between relaxation and contemplation

After a day in the mountains, a moment of relaxation at the spa is particularly appreciated. The BEAUSiTE hotel, renowned for meeting the expectations of the most demanding mountaineers, offers an exceptional wellness area. Mountain caves, winter garden, indoor pool. In the spa, relaxation is the watchword. Outside, the infinity pool offers a breathtaking view of the Matterhorn. Here, for a few minutes of contemplation, this Valaisan giant seems to communicate with our spirit, lifting us into the world of heights. In addition to saunas, steam rooms, infrared cabins and vitariums, the hotel also boasts a fitness room. Clad in natural wood, this room is equipped with Nohrd brand fitness equipment for a memorable experience in perfect harmony with the alpine environment.

Discover Zermatt from Hotel BEAUSiTE

Let me introduce you to this village as a treasure born of the mountains and the audacity of mankind. The capital of the Swiss Alps, Zermatt is undoubtedly one of the world's most famous ski resorts. The village owes its fame to the mountains that surround it. All majestic, all mythical. Among them, the Matterhorn, emblem of Switzerland, rising to 4478 meters above sea level. Few summits rival the Matterhorn's aestheticism. Since the golden age of mountaineering, tourists from all over the world have come to admire the giant pyramid, some attempting to climb it, others observing it from Zermatt. I invite you to take the Gornergrat Bah, Europe's highest cog railway. It takes you to the summit the Gornergrat at an altitude of 3,089 metres. Up there, the view of the Alps is unforgettable, and the Matterhorn shows all its splendor.

All year round, just a stone's throw from the BEAUSiTE hotel, a multitude of activities are on offer. To quench your thirst for adventure, Zermatt 's mountain guides will take you to the summit the most emblematic peaks: Lyskamm, Dufourspitze, Weisshorn... High-mountain enthusiasts will soar to these peaks. Hiking enthusiasts will be delighted to explore the massif from every angle. From the five-lake trail to the Furi suspension bridge path, the most breathtaking Alpine panoramas are waiting to be discovered. Others will prefer to visit Zermatt from a historical perspective. The Zermatlantis Matterhorn Museum plunges visitors into the epic tales of the past. We shudder at the sight of the torn rope from the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Travel through the life of the mountain over the centuries.

Zermatt is also full of surprises with the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, the highest gondola ride in the Alps. Between Zermatt and Cervinia, the ropeway takes you on a journey above fauna, flora and glacial landscapes. All in luxurious surroundings at 3500 m altitude.

Taking advantage of the activities available around the BEAUSiTE hotel means discovering the 360 km of ski slopes open in winter. Taste the flavours of the high mountains and breathe the crystal-clear air of the summits. It's to contemplate the beauty of a landscape of a thousand lights and feel the thrill of gliding under your skis. In summer, the resort also opens its doors to the Théodule glacier. Under a generous sun, the pleasures of skiing take on a whole new dimension.

As an artist of the Alps, I pay tribute to the exceptional architecture of the BEAUSiTE Hotel in Zermatt. From the heights, it shimmers in the glow of the Matterhorn. Standing in front of this giant of the Alps, in the heart of such an elegant hotel, invites us to rediscover the mountain in a new light, vibrant with history and modernity.
