Aiguille du Midi
Majesty and Storm
About the work
We're here at the end of the day, just after the storm. Calm has returned, the mountain is calming down. The Aiguille du Midi is just emerging from the fog, still numb from the onslaught of the wind. Two or three times a year, the magic happens. When the conditions are right, when temperature, snow and wind come together in symbiosis, the Aiguille suddenly appears coated in a fabulous plasterwork. It's a miracle of which nature alone has the secret. The image is unique every time, varying with each episode of precipitation. I've been trying for years to unravel the mystery of this phenomenon, but it remains, over and over again. As ephemeral and impenetrable as the most precious masterpieces created by nature.
The Aiguille du Midi rises majestically, piercing the sky and fog. In the background, giving depth to the shot, the Grandes Jorasses peaks rise out of a sea of clouds like a glittering wall. In the company of the Dôme de Rochefort and Mont Mallet, they offer their freshly snow-covered faces to the softness of the first rays of sunshine.
