Aravis
Celestial Emergence
About the work
The majestic, unreal Aravis massif emerges from a winter storm. Wisps of mist still swirling envelop the slopes, giving the scene an enchanting aura. Before our eyes, the peaks seem to float above the void, appearing one after the other in a succession of shots that guide us towards the ultimate summit : the famous Pointe Percée.
The journey begins in the foreground with the Grande Balmaz, the humble guardian who initiates this dreamlike journey. Its silhouette is silhouetted against the wispy atmosphere, as if emerging from an ocean of clouds. To its right, Roualle, massive and imposing, asserts the raw power of the rock. Its ridge reveals itself slowly, blending gentle curves and rough asperities beneath the immaculate veil of snow.
Further on, Tête Pelouse can be seen, delicately enveloped by the receding mist. At every turn, new shades of grey emerge, highlighting the finesse of its ridges.
To its right, La Miaz dominates the wild, immaculate Tré le Crot valley. Not far away, the Roche Perfia rises up, conveying an atmosphere both serene and wild. A little further back, the famous Trou de la Mouche catches the eye: a natural arch cut into the wall, in which a person can clearly be seen. His presence, tiny in the face of immensity, reminds us how little we are in the face of mountain grandeur.
Continuing our imaginary ascent, we discover Tardevant, its curving slopes illuminated by the light. The scene is suspended in time: wisps of fog still cling to certain ridges, while others suddenly break free, revealing immense surfaces of sparkling white. Mont Flory and, further on, Mont Charvet follow, their sharp profiles cut into the cloud-laden sky. Each summit seems to take centre stage, emerging from this sea of clouds to claim its own identity.
In the background, culminating at 2750 metres, the Pointe Percée reigns supreme over the Aravis. Its distinctive summit dominates the horizon, a proud witness to the force of the elements that have just swept through the region. It is towards this peak that our gaze converges. The snowy garment that adorns it seems almost too perfect, shaped by the winds. Its slender appearance and tapered tip make it instantly recognizable, like an emblem we never tire of admiring.
In this work, I wanted to convey the profoundly wild dimension of the massif. Despite the proximity of valleys and people, these mountains retain an untamed character. The silvery contrasts underline the freshness of the recently deposited snow, while the residual thickness of the clouds recalls the recent violence of the storm. In this still tormented landscape, the delicate morning light caresses the summits, offering a spectacle of rare subtlety.
Over the years, I've learned to watch for those fleeting moments when the mountain reveals a new face. When the mist lifts, when the sun's rays break through for the first time, when everything calms down but nothing is set in stone. It's then that we become fully aware of the power of the landscape and the mystery that inhabits it. This scene, where the Aravis mountains blossom in the sky, invites us to contemplate and respect. A fragment of eternity that I hope to share with you, so that the flame of wonder never goes out.
