Bernina Massif
Illuminated Crossing
About the work
Our journey begins to the left of this panoramic view at summit on Piz Palü. The sparkling folds of its royal drapery reveal the beauty of this colossus and its hanging glaciers. We then travel over the Bellavista to reach the bold summit of Piz Zupò at 3995 metres above sea level. This magnificent peak is little-known, however, as it doesn't reach the 4,000 metres revered by mountaineers. Escaping glory, it faces the sky out of sight, like the silent heroine of a mad epic. From Piz Argient, our footsteps lead us to summit du Piz Bernina, at an altitude of 4018 metres. Lord of the Engadine and a mountain of legend. Opposite, the Pizzo Bianco rises up to the splendour of Biancograt , sculpted by light and shadow. The ridge continues to Piz Scerscen, adorned with impressive glaciers. In the foreground of this grandiose panorama, Piz Morteratsch and Piz Tschierva, sumptuous pyramids, reveal the purity of their snow-covered rock.
I've dreamed of this marvellous work of art for so many years. Of that special angle chosen by the late winter sun to caress the frosted mountains. Of that depth mixed with gentleness that takes us beyond photography to meet summits and its thousand-year-old soul. I've long dreamed of one day immortalizing the striking power of this celestial world. The beauty of its relief, the power of its lines, the richness of its history. The ridges that have been trodden so many times by mountaineers, making the Bernina shine. I wanted snow and rock to unite. I wanted the cloud-laden sky to contrast with the dazzling brilliance of the mountains. I wanted to offer you this magical journey where, plunged into the bitter cold of winter, we suddenly feel the promising warmth of dawn.
But for that, I had to wait. Waiting for the sun to break through the clouds and finally illuminate the Bernina massif. Waiting and waiting for luck. Because if you don't believe in miracles, you can't expect them to happen. So I listen to my instincts and pursue my quest, tirelessly and despite setbacks, for the chance one day to see my dreams come true. In photography, in mountaineering or in life, I move forward and seize my chance.
