Here we are, facing Besso, a fabulous mountain dominating Zinal and val d’Anniviers. From the top of its 3669 meters, it captures our gaze and stirs in us the desire to climb it one day. I took this portrait of Besso from the heights of the Corne de Sorebois, at summit of the Zinal and Grimentz ski areas. To its left, the Blanc de Moming ridge scrolls past, carried by its hanging glacier. At the foot of Besso, ancient moraines remind us of the splendour of vanished glaciers. Like the indelible imprint of a glorious past. This unchanging drape gives the mountain an unrivalled presence.

It's spring and the Alps are roaring. Surrounded by two storms, Besso battles the furious winds. Born in the heart of the Imperial Crown of Zinal, he suddenly feels orphaned. Alone in the face of adversity. The mist has swallowed up his legendary brothers, and now he can only rely on himself. Equipped with twin peaks, Besso brandishes a cross from its right-hand summit to face the sky. Lone hero of a forgotten kingdom.

See how the sun manages to seep through the clouds. Urging Besso to keep hoping. To fight on against all odds. For beyond the winds and the thick mist, there is a world where all is light. I love this work because it's in color, but still monochrome.
