Castor
Guardian of the Glacial Kingdom
About the work
In this vertical black-and-white work, I wanted to highlight the splendour of the Castor glaciers, once thought to be eternal. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and since I first set foot in the region in 2013, the landscape has undergone a metamorphosis. To take this photograph, I stayed at Monte Rosa Hütte. The glacier by which the hut was still accessed in 2013 has been completely transformed, making the route impassable. As a result, the hut's janitor, Richard Lehner, was forced to create a new access path to the hut. Crossing the glacier, this magnificent route is now one of the most beautiful in the Alps. An authentic high-mountain journey through some of Europe's most beautiful peaks. Admire this photograph of Castor as a tribute to the beauty of the mountains and their thousand-year-old glaciers, which are inexorably depleted by our scorching summers.
To bring this work to life, I spent several days at the Monte Rosa hut, hoping for the arrival of snow and wind. But the predicted storm faded and faded, and the long-awaited precipitation never came. As I crossed the glacier to return down to the refuge, clouds suddenly invaded the sky. The sun's rays, filtered through the mist, continued to illuminate the mountain in places. My eyes were suddenly caught by the power of the scene before me. I only had a few seconds to immortalize this view from Castor before the darkness of the sky engulfed summit. The storm was approaching, forcing me to leave the scene. But what luck to have been able to witness such a spectacle! The chain of glaciers leads our gaze to the summit of Castor. A journey for the soul, supported by exceptional graphics. Wonderful seracs and crevasses structure the picture. Soft contrasts endow the photograph with a striking depth. The play of textures and tones tells the story of this giant of the Alps. From rock and ice, Castor emerges, carried by the elements to the ends of the earth.
