Matterhorn
the King of the Alps
About the work
In 2017, I set off once again to meet him. I reached Zermatt while the winds were furiously sweeping the heights. I was worried, however, about whether the recent snowfalls had sufficiently adorned the Matterhorn with its white mantle. In recent years, snow has become rarer on our summits. But the call of the mountain was too Powerful to give up. Suddenly, the veil of mist parted, revealing a sublime vision that gripped me whole. The Matterhorn stood there, majestic and solitary. Its silhouette seemed sculpted by a divine hand. The light caressed the ridges. From the Hörnli to the Zmutt ridge, the mountain was outlined with precision. The fresh snow accentuated every detail, creating the Powerful contrast between light and shadow that gives this photograph its dramatic dimension. A fleeting cloud brushed against the summit, like a bridal veil carried by the wind.
In that fleeting moment, I felt that deep communion that mountaineers know so well - fusion with the mineral element. My camera captured the exceptional clarity that transformed the mountain into a silvery apparition, almost unreal in its perfection.
What moves me about this portrait of the Matterhorn is the quiet dignity it exudes. Unchanging for millennia, it gazes down on us from on high. And yet, I can't help wondering about its future. What will become of this legendary mountain once the glaciers that adorn its base have disappeared? Will it retain its majesty in the face of the climatic upheavals that are transforming the Alps?
