Matterhorn and Dent d'Hérens
La Haute Route du Ciel
About the work
On an icy morning, I flew by helicopter over the Tête Blanche. Suddenly, the mountains emerged from the thick mist like islands of rock rising from the depths of the sea at the dawn of the world. The Matterhorn and the Dent d'Hérenstwo sumptuous colossi. The first known to all, the second unfathomably wild. Around them, the clouds twirl and swirl in an impetuous dance. As the wind sweeps over their crests, the still-fresh snow gives the mountains their crystalline reflections.
A celestial face-off between two titanic brothers. The Matterhorn and the Dent d'Hérens seem to be animated by the same fervor. Two voices singing a grandiose hymn to celestial beauty. Yet they are so far away. And yet, with a flap of its wings, photography is able to offer us the world. In a single glance, we are seasoned mountaineers, making a journey that on Earth would have taken several days.
I love the palpable, unspeakable emotions exhaled by the heavy winter morning sky. I love the serene atmosphere of photography, the geometry of its lines, its exceptional contrasts. But most of all, I love this rare light, full of meaning and history, which elevates the high mountains to the status of a masterly work of art. A gift from heaven that will take you back to your Alpine odyssey along the high road from Chamonix to Zermatt. When you reach the summit of Tête Blanche, you'll have the chance to contemplate this fabulous panorama.
