Matterhorn and Obergabelhorn
Duel of the Titans
About the work
The Matterhorn, recognisable by its iconic pyramid shape, immediately catches the eye. Its rocky surface, marked by centuries of erosion and climatic challenges, bears witness to the implacable force of nature. Directly in front of it, the Obergabelhorn, although smaller in size than the giant that is the Matterhorn, is no less imposing, with its sharp ridges and famous North Face that seems vertical.
The sea of clouds enveloping the bases of the two summits adds a mystical dimension to the scene. These clouds, like soft absorbent cotton, contrast with the apparent hardness of the mountains, creating a visual harmony. I created this work after a storm had passed, reinforcing the idea that despite the challenges of the weather, these mountains remain unshakeable, eternal.
The work as a whole reminds us of our humility in the face of nature's grandeur, and invites us to contemplate the wild, unspoilt beauty of the Alps. It's a celebration of nature's resilience in the face of the elements, and a testament to the show it puts on after the storm in fleeting moments.
I had to wait 15 years to witness this celestial moment.
