Matterhorn
The Twilight Glow
About the work
It's a summer evening. The last rays of the sun are caressing the Matterhorn's north face, freshly dusted with snow. It's only possible to capture this soft, deep light on the north side of the mountain at the end of the day. The image is therefore becoming rare, and all the more precious as rising summer temperatures take the snow further away from summits every year.
The shot is in color, which is unusual in my work. Here, blue replaces black in a pure monochrome. By working with light and shapes, I wanted to highlight the grandeur of the Matterhorn. Here, its eastern face is plunged into darkness, while its northern slope is illuminated at dusk. In the center, the Hörnli ridge is torn between light and shadow.
I took this photograph at low altitude. The fir trees in the foreground contrast with the rock giant, reinforcing its searing beauty and unrivalled grandeur. From Zermatt, the view is breathtaking. The Matterhorn rises in all its splendour, culminating at 3,000 metres above the village. The effect is hypnotic and overwhelming. Every time I visit Zermatt, I'm stunned by its charisma and discover it as if for the first time. The feeling you get when it imposes itself on you like this, alone in the middle of the sky, is unique in the Alps and probably in the world.
