About the work
I had to be patient to take this magnificent black and white photograph. After years of waiting, the Cime de l'Est was finally dressed in its finest to reveal its vibrant soul to mankind. This winter's night was marked by heavy snowfall. Around midday, as calm returned, the mist seemed to play with the rock. In the midst of this incessant ballet between the elements, I perceive a purity. The rock sparkles with freshly fallen snow. It illuminates the picture like a diamond nestled in a jewel. In the angle of the photograph, I chose to capture part of the forest, a detail rarely highlighted in my mountain work. As I was 2,500 metres lower than summit de la Cime de l'Est, I wanted to capture the immensity of its face and the contrast between the human realm and the world above. With my head riveted to the sky, this mountain never ceases to inspire me.
