Grand Cornier and Dent Blanche
Familiarity with the peaks
About the work
I took this portrait of the mountains after many years of waiting. To see Dent Blanche and the Grand Cornier so covered in snow is only possible once or twice a year. A Himalayan mirage that only lasts a few moments. When heavy snowfalls suddenly give way to the reborn sun. So I have to be there, facing the mountains, ready to contemplate their ephemeral splendor. For the minutes are counted before the spectacle before me evaporates. Curious nature, sculpting masterpieces as grandiose as they are fleeting.
I chose this angle of view because it allows the mountains to overlap. Their peaks rise skyward in a single sweep. The verticality of their faces unites them. The Grand Cornier puts Dent Blanche on a pedestal. The dynamic lines of Dent Blanche invite us to discover the secrets of the Grand Cornier. I love the textures that emerge from the snow. The striations that redraw the rock faces. The work is exceptionally graphic, with sumptuous silvery contrasts. Even in the deepest shadows, the mountains reveal themselves. We discover their flamboyant beauty as well as their most Soft mysteries.
