Bertol's teeth
the breath ofArolla
About the work
I took this vertical-format photograph from the Bertol hut, at an altitude of 3311 meters. The timing was ideal - a recent snowfall had draped the landscape in a powdery mantle of absolute purity. The contrasts were striking. The composition of the work reveals the full diversity of the Alpine landscape. In the foreground, the gentle undulations of the snowy slopes naturally guide our gaze towards the vertical faces and sharp edges of the Dents de Bertol. These summits, whose jagged crests look like bites in the sky, rise to an altitude of over 3,500 metres.
What moves me about this landscape is its ephemeral yet eternal character. Ephemeral, because these vast expanses change with the seasons, offering an idyllic playground for ski tourers in spring. Eternal, because these mountains, sculpted by millennia, remind us of our humble condition in the face of the immensity of geological time.
The clouds that skim the summits add a mystical dimension to the scene, partially veiling the peaks in a perpetual game of hide-and-seek. This dance between the visible and the invisible lends the work its emotional depth.
By immortalizing the Dents de Bertol from this angle, I wanted to share with you the pure emotion of contemplating these unspoilt spaces. In this remote corner of the Valais, far from human bustle, the mountains still speak to us with sincerity.
