Doldenhorn
Winter Sunshine
About the work
This photograph illustrates the power of the image and the magic of art, daring to give pride of place to little-known subjects. I discovered the Doldenhorn thanks to the work of Bradford Washburn, a pioneer of alpine photography. He took an aerial shot of the mountain as a mountaineering party crossed its ridge, under which was then a huge hanging glacier. Today, this glacier has almost disappeared. In his time, the high summits were covered in their winter finery until the height of summer. Nowadays, the rock is dry during the summer season, and only storms occasionally plunge the mountains back into their glorious past. But only for a few hours. Then the snow cover disappears again, leaving the dark rock to reappear. The presence of climbers in these moments of grace has thus become rare, making Bradford Washburn's work a precious testimony to a bygone era. I'd like to think that my photographs also help to consolidate the legacy of a mountain in the grip of the madness of time.
