As day breaks, the storm recedes, defeated by the still soaring mountains. On the left, the Eiger shows its might. A celestial creature, the ogre reveals its inaccessible north face to the eyes of its kingdom. Through its wind-frosted rocks, its epic, dark history unfolds. When man confronts it, tragedy follows tragedy, until the most beautiful of victories comes: the opening of the Heckmair route. On the left, the Mittellegi ridge links the mountain's summit to the Mittellegi hut, which is so small on the map that it is barely visible.

To the right of the Eiger, Mönch stands between light and shadow. Its glittering east face is the stuff of dreams for steep skiers. Then the ridge leads us up to the Jungfraujoch pass, made famous by the train that takes us there. A marvellous journey to the most beautiful glaciers of bernese alps. Finally, on the right-hand side of the picture, Jungfrau takes pride of place. The summits of Wengen-Jungfrau and Jungfrau follow one another, pointing towards the horizon.
