Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau
Renaissance of the Pyramids of Grindelwald
About the work
The Eiger dominates the entire valley from the top of its 3967m limestone peak. Ever since the first ascent of its infernal Nordwand, this insatiable "ogre", with its ominous reputation, has not ceased to claim, decade after decade, the lives of other mountaineers eager to tackle its obscure face.
At 4110m, the Mönch is still shrouded in clouds. The man nicknamed the "monk" is contemplating creation.
The Jungfrau or "maiden", a name presumably inherited from the nuns of Interlaken who once had a convent in the region dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is cloaked in a thick white veil: a sea of clouds, a sign of past bad weather, drapes its snow-covered flanks for a few moments yet.
An ephemeral moment between virgin sky and cloud, shadow and light...
