Grand Combin
Infinite Horizons
About the work
From the northern ridge of the Combin du Valsorey, in the foreground of the photograph, we reach the summit of the Combin de Grafeneire. From the heights of the Combin de la Tsessette, nature reveals the splendours of the world. How can a mountain offer such a panorama? Shots follow one another, lines intertwine and carry us into the heart of immensity. In the Val de Bagnes, Le Pleureur, Mont Blanc de Cheilon and La Runette pass before our eyes. Then, in the Val d'Hérens, we are transported to the Aiguilles rouges d'Arolla, the Pigne d'Arolla, the Évêque, the Mont Collon, the Bouquetins and the Dent d'Hérens. From val d’Anniviers to the Zermatt valley, the high summits of the Imperial Crown of Zinal and the Matterhorn rise. Our odyssey ends at the border of the Zermatt and Saas Fee valleys, on the Mischabel and Mont-Rose massifs. On the left, Grand Combin guides us to the mythical peaks of bernese alps. The Finsteraarhorn, the Aletschhorn and the Mönch point skyward in the morning shadow.
I painted this panoramic shortly after my ascent of Grand Combin. At summit I discovered this exceptional viewpoint. When I saw the Alps caressed by summer light. At that precise moment, I knew that nature was calling me to immortalize it. So I waited for the storms to come. For the snow to feed the parched rock. I waited for the day when dawn united with light mist to give the picture depth. Snow brushed by the emerging light, shadows sculpting the age-old rock. And the Alps, singing through the valleys, a magnificent ode to the immeasurable.
