Grand Combin
Himalayan panorama
About the work
The sun rises in the Swiss Valais, while the winds are still pouring down on the high summits mountains. All night long, the mountain has struggled. Vigorous and invincible, it has never ceased to confront the elements. Its rock was alternately swept away and covered in snow. But with the first light of day, the storm moved on to brave other valleys. Giving the Combin time to breathe. Then, barely awakening, the mountain emerged, reborn immaculate at the tip of the sky.
At the heart of this celestial panorama, the Combin de Grafeneire sparkles in the sun. Then the light takes hold of the Combin de la Tsessette and Valsorey. The heroine of the picture, the eastern face of the mountain shimmers and soars, like a silver wave of overwhelming magnitude. And as my gaze plunges closer to its rock, caressing its snow-white contours, I think of Paul Bonhomme and Vivian Bruchez, who achieved the feat of skiing down this vertiginous face. My eyes then rise to the crests of Grand Combin and its brothers. And then I remember the traverse I made from the Combin de Valsorey to the Tour de Boussine. It was an unforgettable adventure, traversing the Combin de Grafeneire, the Aiguille du Croissant and the Combin de la Tsessette. On the right of the photograph, the dream continues, from the Mulets de la Tsessette to Tournelon Blanc. Is the work guiding me to these majestic summits ?
From shadow to light, the painting invites us on a journey. In this perfect moment, when the Tsessette glacier is still in shadow, revealing only its tip, but the Combin shines, more alive than ever. United with the sky and the stars, it displays its omnipotence, far beyond the world of man.
