Gross Grünhorn
Journey to Heaven
About the work
I took this photograph of the Gross-Grünhorn when the gale-force winds had just covered it with snow. A glittering adornment of ephemeral reflections, sublimating the presence of an ordinarily discreet giant. For there are portraits we must conquer. The mountains of the high plateau of the Aletsch glacier shelter far from man. They conceal their grandeur, downplaying their power. To highlight their prominence, I had to be patient and tenacious. Searching for the perfect angle, the ideal gradient, pinpointing the precise spot where the mountain breaks free from the glacier it overhangs. It's a tough job, but I do it. Out of love for the Alps and in honour of a nature that inspires and moves me.
The Grosses-Grünhorn rises from the ice like a summit Himalaya. Perfect pyramid, immaculate colossus. From shadow to light, its lines reveal the depth of the landscape. I love the details revealed by the snow on its rocky walls. I love the play of textures that shapes its flanks, the beauty of its crests, the elegance of its drapery. Every day, the mountain changes. It metamorphoses and I'm there for it. To reveal its infinite grace, to offer you the most beautiful of portraits.
