The Matterhorn
Celestial Fortress of the Alps
About the work
In the midst of the storm, the Matterhorn reveals itself, proud and massive: a veritable fortress of the heavens. The moment lasts only a few seconds; then the clouds close in on this summit of the gods and conceal, for long hours, the most beautiful jewel in the Alps.
This helicopter shot highlights the verticality of this face. No route is easy, and summit has to be earned. This mountain teaches us humility. When I climbed it, I felt so small in the face of this thousand-year-old giant, whose strength is plain to see. I have the utmost admiration for those who have climbed this hellish rock for the first time!
This shot is unique. That day, it was impossible to know whether summit would be visible. Then, in the midst of total uncertainty: an epiphany. The white of the plastered snow sparkled like a thousand diamonds and dazzled my lens. The Matterhorn finally shines through the storm. The winds beat down on this beacon of the heavens. At that moment, I was the only human to witness this incredible spectacle of nature.
The conditions were perfect and the weather window short. The high resolution of this work will allow the attentive viewer to observe every detail. Crusty snow, sharp rocks, a small statue of Saint Bernard... it's all there for those who take the time to admire this unique shot.
