The Drus
Celestial Obelisk
About the work
This is a portrait of Les Drus, the legendary summit the Mont Blanc massif, which rises to 3754 meters above sea level. The mountain emerges from the winter mist. Behind it, the Flammes de Pierre ridge overlooks Montenvers. At the summit Les Drus, the statue of the Blessed Virgin stands to protect the valley and neighbouring summits .
I took this black-and-white photograph after a violent winter storm. For long hours, days and nights, I waited patiently for the elements to merge. When finally, the mountain revealed itself, freshly covered in snow. The light finely sculpted every contour of this granite spear reaching for the sky.
The photograph captures the essence of the Alps, their raw power and timeless beauty. The last clouds still cling to the summit. The Drus inspires me deeply with its slender silhouette, a veritable stone obelisk that pierces the sky and seems to defy eternity. Contemplating the Drus from the Chamonix valley, their presence imposes itself with incredible force, reminding us of our smallness in the face of the immensity of the mountains.
