The Bishop
le Cri du Glacier
About the work
In the heart of the Val d'Hérens, l'Évêque stands at 3,717 meters above sea level, overlooking the Valais Alps. On a hot summer's day in 2017, I captured this photograph of the north face, revealing the fragility of a glacier battered by global warming. It's a moving picture of powerful yet vulnerable beauty.
L'Évêque, located close to the Italian border, silently watches over the Mont Collon glacier to the west and a névé of the Haut glacier d'Arolla to the east. But on this day, the mountain reveals an alarming reality: the ice is melting, rock is appearing, the glacier is inexorably retreating. Each deep, dark crevasse, each exposed rock, tells the harsh story of nature's desperate struggle against the ravages of climate.
I've watched this mountain for a long time, a discreet but powerless witness to a slow transformation. This glacier, once thick and Powerful, now bears the visible scars of extreme heat, a reminder of how fragile the alpine balance is. Through this photograph, Bishop seems to be launching a silent cry, an appeal to preserve these exceptional landscapes before it's too late.
Faced with this summit, my emotions are intense. The wild beauty of the Bishop contrasts violently with the dramatic reality of its degradation. Every detail of this photograph is a poignant reminder of the climate challenge facing the Alps today. As we contemplate this portrait of the Bishop, we are invited to reflect, to act, to preserve the soul of the mountains for future generations.
