Mont Blanc
Journey to the Beyond
About the work
In the foreground, Le Chardonnet and the Col du Passon set the scene. Further on, the Argentière valley unfolds, dominated by its imposing north faces: the Courtes, the Droites and the Verte, each radiating imperious majesty. Behind these giants, Grandes Jorasses frames the Talèfre basin. Their ridge leads our gaze to the Dent du Géant in a striking play of light and shadow. In the distance, the silhouette of the Maurienne and Écrins mountains can be seen. On the right, Mont Blanc, the jewel of the French Alps, emerges from the clouds, flanked by its sturdy bastions: the Peuterey ridge and the Goûter.
I had to fly to an altitude of almost 5,000 metres to immortalize this moment. Opening the helicopter door, even for a few minutes, was a moment when my mind, troubled by the sudden altitude gain, began to waver. My beard froze. One thought kept coming back to me: "Concentrate, Thomas. Guide the pilot. This is a unique moment, you may never again have the chance to contemplate the massif in these conditions." For on that day, everything was lined up for an exceptional journey into the heart of the Mont Blanc massif and into the beyond.
