About the work
This black-and-white work of art of the Matterhorn was captured in the last light of autumn 2019. First snows arrive in the high mountains. The world above returns to calm after the tumult of summer. For the next few weeks, nature alone will reign in this mystical universe. Man rarely dares to confront the mountains in autumn.
Beyond the King of the Alps, a sumptuous massif takes shape. Mont-Rose spreads its marvellous wings. From left to right, Dufourspitze, Zumstein, Marguerite, Parospitze, Lyskamm, Breithorn and Castor. Each summit reveals its own character, singular presence and unique history.
I love this luminous work. The Matterhorn opens up to us in majesty, backed by its neighbouring mountains shrouded in eternal ice. The Matterhorn reigns between earth and sky, while the surrounding summits crown it like flaming diamonds. Lose yourself in your imagination. Do you perceive abstract shapes? An animal? A mysterious force? The mountains push back the boundaries of our own creativity. Often observed from Zermatt, I chose to capture this photograph from the Val d'Hérens to leave you free to imagine. Only mountaineers know this face, yet it is marvellous, beautiful and unique in its immensity. I love looking down on it, imagining myself at the summit, filled with happiness and adrenalin. I reveal the Matterhorn in its absolute purity.
