Matterhorn
Autumn Majesty
About the work
This sublime black-and-white photograph highlights the mountain's north face and the glacier at its foot. But how much longer will we be able to admire it like this? Every year, it shrinks a little more. The imbalances caused by global warming are having a violent and irreparable impact on the Alpine ecosystem. Melting glaciers and collapsing rocks. I hope with all my heart that the Matterhorn will resist the inevitable changes imposed on it for as long as possible.
I took this portrait of the Matterhorn in autumn. In the late afternoon, the soft, enveloping light barely touches the mountain. The mid-season sun gives us the opportunity to take a fresh look at summit. The remarkable contrasts of snow and rock shake up our certainties. In rediscovering the mountain in this way, we are surprised by the changing, elusive beauty of a nature that cannot be tamed. The autumn light also enhances the different planes of the photograph. Against a backdrop of gradations of gray, the Matterhorn rises majestically in the center of a picture of exceptional graphic quality. A splendid, intense atmosphere. In this picture, I particularly like the presence of the Matterhorn, whose peak proudly pierces the horizon. Without fear or attachment, it seems to defy the world as if it were its master, imperturbable and solitary. Powerful and arrogant ruler of the Alps that nothing and no-one can shake.
