Mischabels
Alpine harmony above Zermatt
About the work
The eye wanders over the tapering ridges that shape the composition. Contrasts of black and white underline the verticality of the walls and highlight the Soft cirques where the snow lies. Here, the dark rock takes on the appearance of an abrupt rampart, while there, the white slabs open up possible paths for the adventurous mountaineer or ski tourer. The interplay of light and shadow creates zones of mystery, sculpting the material and revealing the silent power of the high mountains.
Viewed from Zermatt, this panorama invites both contemplation and reflection. The Mischabels evoke a world apart, an almost secret realm, protected by the harshness of winter and the finesse of the ridges. In spring, when the snow turns into a more stable mantle, a few enthusiasts dare to venture onto these faces, following the classic itineraries or drawing their own lines. However, the mountain never gives itself up completely: every slope conceals its own traps, and every couloir can quickly close again, thanks to a change in the weather or too rapid a warming of the snow.
In the purity of black and white, the summits seem to spring from the immensity, as if they were closer to the sky than to the earth. This is undoubtedly one of the reasons why I like this treatment: it distills the very essence of the high mountains, without distracting it with color. As a result, details appear sharper: the slightest cornice, the subtlest reflection, the jaggedness of a ridge catching the early morning light. A refined aesthetic that reinforces the mythical aura of these peaks, while preserving their mystery.
Over the years, I've had the opportunity to explore several of these summits. Memories mingle with the visual emotion of this image. I remember those moments when, with crampons on, I felt the ice crunch under my feet, my breath taken away by the vertical. I also remember those moments of grace when, from a natural belvedere, I admired the shadows stretching across the valley.
In this panorama, everything is in balance: the succession of summits, the variation of slopes, and the discreet choreography of the clouds above. An invitation to soak up the fierce serenity of the massif, to escape for a moment out of time. For, through the lens, I seek not only to immortalize the splendor of a landscape, but to convey that sense of wonder. A deep emotion, born of the encounter between the most extreme verticality and the softest light. And it is precisely this encounter that gives the Mischabels their special place in Alpine heritage.
