From the heights of Chamonix, Mont Blanc rises above the clouds. A glittering dome of snow and ice dominating the Alps, at 4808 meters above sea level. I took this fleeting photograph in the dead of winter. The tumultuous winds are raging in the high mountains, sweeping across the glaciers and craggy rocks. Under the driving snow, I watched for the moment when nature reemerges more beautiful than ever. Gazing out at the end of time. Trying in vain to make out the shadows of summits engulfed in mist. When suddenly Mont Blanc rose from the clouds. Defying the elements, joining the sky. At the end of the day, the Alps offered me a grandiose spectacle.

At the foot of Mont Blanc and its north face lie the Grand Plateau and Petit Plateau. The Grands Mulets refuge can also be seen in the photograph. In 1786, this legendary hut had the privilege of welcoming Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard when they were the first to reach the highest summit in the Alps. To the left of the picture, Mont Maudit rises out of the mist.

I love the soft, frosty atmosphere that pervades the photograph. Vaporous mountains, elusive giants. This pure and very contemporary painting reminds me of Vincent Munier's work. Poured with soft, deep hues, nature fades away, only to re-emerge. The striking contrasts here seem to tell us the epic story of the Alps: the intensity of the sharp ice, the whiteness of the snow and the rock that goes from black to grey, guiding us skywards to the immaculate Mont Blanc.
