Mont Blanc
Celestial Journey
About the work
When I painted this picture, I was on board a helicopter flying over Chamonix. A winter storm had just hit summits and the clouds were impassable. Until they parted. We then managed to slip through the cloud barrier to reach the kingdom above. The sky was ours. What incredible luck! A wonderful world unfolded before our astonished eyes, much to my delight. The highest summits in the Alps, freshly covered in snow, were reborn with the sun. They seemed to float on a sea of clouds like islands in the middle of the ocean.
I particularly love the lanky beauty of the Aiguille du Midi ridge. The majestic diagonal that takes us royally up to summit du mont Blanc, at an altitude of over 4800 metres. The dynamics guide us beyond time into an infinite world that, from the ground, we have no idea exists. I chose this angle because it highlights the immensity of the massif. A beauty that words struggle to convey, but that images bring to life. With force and emotion.
