Mont-Fort Cross
Frosted Sentinel
About the work
The violent contrast between this blindingly white apparition and the inky-black sky accentuates the mystical dimension of the scene. The cross seems to float in a cosmic void, detached from the material world. The stark contrast between light and shadow evokes a binary world in which the boundaries between the real and the imaginary become completely blurred. The horizontal arms of the cross, weighed down by their icy finery, tilt slightly, as if the structure were bending under the weight of its wintry covering. Frost has sculpted fantastic forms on every surface - intricate lacework, stalactites, bulbous outgrowths less reminiscent of human handiwork than of the whimsical architecture of coral reefs. Nature has appropriated this human creation and transformed it into an ephemeral work of art.
