Mount Rose
The ice empire
About the work
In the foreground, Nordend, the fourth-highest summit in the Alps, rises with determination. Its sharp tip seems to pierce the sky, protected by a vast glacier that generously covers its flanks. This glacier adds a touch of softness and immaculate whiteness, contrasting with the dark rock and steep walls that appear through the freshly deposited snow. Just behind the Nordend, the Dufourspitze, the highest summit in the Swiss Alps, is discreetly outlined, slightly hidden but nevertheless revealing all its alpine majesty. Further on, the Gnifetti Point (Signalkuppe) and the Parrotspitze complete this spectacular picture of the massif. The composition also highlights the remarkable Marinelli Couloir, which descends from the slopes of the Zumsteinspitze. Recognized as one of the longest couloirs in the Alps, it appears here in all its splendor.
I captured this scene just after a winter storm, with the first light of day breaking through the clouds. And despite the drama at play here, the work is sublime. From shadow to light, the summits Monte Rosa mingle. They answer each other, radiant and complicit. All victorious in a battle against the winds, they embody the power of the Alps and our hopes for the future.
