Monte Rosa
Between Calm and Storm
About the work
I created this work at daybreak, after the passage of a spring storm. Just as the skies had cleared, a new disturbance appeared. The clouds thicken and cling to the freshly snow-covered rocks. The last rays of light illuminate their magnificent white mantle before the sky darkens and engulfs summits. In the photograph, several climbers are hurrying down the monterosa gletscher on skis to avoid being trapped by the fury of the winds. Slowed by the heavy mass of snow that had fallen during the night, they were forced to turn back before reaching the Dufourspitze pass. The insignificant size of the men in the image reminds us of our necessary humility in the face of the mountain's power and the force of the elements.
By using soft, light tones, I wanted to convey the intensity of the battle between heaven and earth. The photograph also highlights the incredible scale of Dufourspitze and Nordend. Their inaccessible cliffs and imposing glaciers reveal their infinite grandeur. While we usually take a step back from the Mount Rose massif, here the mountains take up the whole picture. The work invites us to immerse ourselves in the heart of the inaccessible and the wild.
