Nadelgrat
Journey to the Heart of the Peaks
About the work
This is one of my finest mountain photographs. I took it in the spring of 2022, during the only day of snowfall in the canton of Valais that year. When I admire this work, I always feel a great deal of emotion. It brings back so many fabulous memories. The previous year, I had crossed the Nadelgrat ridge, that long path from summits to summits, perched between earth and sky. Communing body and soul with nature, rising beyond oneself to reach the heavens. The intensity of the feelings that overwhelm me at that moment is on a par with the grandiose and disproportionate beauty of this ridge.
This work brings together everything that drives my art. The impression of grandeur and purity that carries the mountain in majesty. The celestial immensity of a wilderness at the dawn of time. The flight of summits, between light and shadow. The incredible texture of snow illuminated by the first rays of the sun. The dramatic intensity of the scene, supported by a flood of clouds that give the painting unprecedented depth. Here, a single image is enough to convey the beauty of the world.
In an instant, the sky cleared, revealing this marvellous spectacle to anyone who could see it. The Nadelgrat ridge like a fortress, lined with seracs and gigantic crevasses like so many buttresses protecting the Dom, visible in the background. At 4545 metres, it is the highest summit in Switzerland. Wouldn't you rather see Dufourspitze to your left? It's just a few metres higher, but it straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy. Behind the wall of rock and ice rise the mythical summits of the Saas Fee and Zermatt valleys, emerging from the mist just after the storm. Allalinhorn , the Rimpfischhorn and Strahlhorn on the left, the Klein Matterhorn, Breithorn and the famous Castor and Pollux on the right. This window on the infinite beauty of the world only opened up before me for a few minutes. A moment of magic too quickly erased by the return of the clouds that swallowed up summits. A fleeting and oh so eternal memory.
