Ober Gabelhorn
Daybreak Diamond
About the work
Spring 2016. This is the season when the mountains are at their most beautiful. I spend the night at the Mountet hut. Bad weather is forecast, but that's all I know. The hut is one of the few places in the Alps where there's no cell phone reception. Cut off from the world, I immerse myself in the wilderness that surrounds me, under the gaze of summits at over 4000 meters altitude. After a few hours' sleep, I leave the night hut and climb on sealskins to the spot that will sublimate the grandeur ofObergabelhorn. The further I go, the more clouds gather around summit. Will I be able to complete my work before the storm gets the better of it? Am I in danger if I continue my ascent?
Despite my doubts, I keep going, because my passion for the mountains is stronger than anything else. Whatever the cost, I must reach it. And when I finally contemplate it like this, the diamond of the Alps carried by the shadow of its great gendarme, I feel all the strength of its soul vibrate within me. The dawn, filtered through the mist, illuminates her snow-white face. And as a mountain photographer, I immortalize the rebirth ofObergabelhorn at dawn.
