Fascinating Dent Blanche. This monstrous coquette, as Guy de Maupassant called it in his short story L'auberge. This is the angle from which he contemplated it. In this panoramic black-and-white photograph, the mountain stands proudly in the Valais Alps, a gigantic pyramid towering over the surrounding summits . To its right, the Dent d'Hérens rises in the shadows, freshly snow-covered and adorned with the magnificent Grandes Murailles glacier. At the foot of Dent Blanche, the Grand Cornier looks so small. Crossing the ridge that takes us to the foreground, we tread the snow-covered crests of the Bouquetins to reach the Pigne de la Lé. A superb vantage point on which I've often bivouacked. The colossal, immaculately white Moiry glacier flows slowly into the lake of the same name.

With this work, I wanted to bear witness to the grandeur and beauty of these Valais mountains. I made it in spring, just as the storm had swept through summits. The last trace of the winds' rage, the clouds are still running low. Isolated from the earth, the peaks reveal their full presence. When mist mingles with ice, the world below seems erased. In this celestial realm, there is no reminder of man's presence. And if he ever thought of climbing up into this wilderness, he would be no more than a point lost in the infinity of these immense reliefs.

I love this photograph for the magic it exudes. For the delicacy of the cast shadows caressing the Moiry glacier. For the softness of the sun's rays on Dent Blanche and its friend the Grand Cornier.
