A luminous portrait of Piz Palü, which, at 3899 m, overlooks the Morteratsch valley on the edge of the eastern Alps. This beautiful mountain, emblematic of the Bernina range in Switzerland's Engadine region, can easily be seen from the Diavolezza lifts. It also offers climbers a superb traverse.

I took this photograph of Piz Palü in spring. The sun was just rising on summit, still seized by the fury of a storm that had covered its walls with snow during the night. Thanks to this carefully considered angle, the photograph gains in depth. The ridge in the foreground, seemingly at one with the teeth of Piz Palü, crystallizes the impetuosity of the winds that continue to batter the snow-covered walls.

I chose this day precisely for its incomparable luminosity. Painting the ridges in shadow and light, it gives this legendary mountain an enchanting, graphic dimension. Indeed, summit owes its extraordinary beauty to its geometry, which is so distinctive and unique in the Alps. Perfect symmetry of ridge after ridge. Nature's timeless rhythm, inexhaustible and heady, makes my heart beat faster. The many hanging and descending glaciers along its ridges also contribute to making Piz Palü a mythical summit .
