Piz Roseg
Altitude Light
About the work
I particularly like the contrast between light and shadow in this photograph. The first rays of sunlight put an end to the reign of darkness. The world is reborn. The ridge sparkles like a diamond and summit embraces the heavens. The mountain awakens. The resplendent shapes of its thousand-year-old hanging glaciers are awe-inspiring. This pyramid of rock and ice is undeniably a mountaineer's dream. But the climb is a demanding one, and, like all summit climbs, it has to be earned.
When I took this photograph, the atmosphere was hypnotic. I didn't know whether the snow would stay on the mountains or fall below, leaving the ice bare. The end result is grandiose, complex: gentle slopes are covered in a blanket of snow, while higher up, steep, windswept slopes reveal incredible detail. At the bottom, imposing seracs remind adventurers of the world above that they must remain humble in the face of nature's power.
