Pointe Percée
Timeless Awakening
About the work
On the left-hand side of the photograph, the Doigt ridge emerges like a vigorous prow; its tapering line underlines the verticality of the walls and reinforces the impression of a mountain in motion. In the center is the famous Pointe Percée arch, a natural hole in the rock that, true to its name, "pierces" the silhouette of the summit. To the right, the normal summer route can be made out, whitened by a thick layer of snow; yet, on this winter's day, it seems totally inhospitable, reinforcing the dreamlike dimension of the scene.
The sea of clouds shrouds the mountain in mystery. A padded carpet contrasting with the mineral rigor of the Pointe Percée. In this suspended moment, the mist seems to cling to every ridge, as if to slow the blossoming of dawn. Higher up, at an altitude of around 4,000 metres, the storm continues to rage: the Aiguille de Bionnassay, buffeted by violent gusts of up to 120 km/h, displays a long flag of clouds, an unmistakable sign of the energy that reigns up there. And yet, right where I'm standing, the wind isn't so strong, giving me just enough time to take in this ephemeral tableau.
I'm fascinated by the dialogue between the Pointe Percée and Mont Blanc . The former rises to 2750 meters, the latter to over 4800 meters; 2300 meters apart, and yet, at this moment, they seem to greet each other in the same light. La Pointe Percée, queen of the Aravis mountains, contemplates its big brother like an unattainable ideal. In the same fraction of a second, the sun rises, illuminating the mist that now hangs over the mountain's eastern flank. This nascent glow, similar to a discreet fire, lends the work an almost unreal atmosphere.
I had to wait many years to witness this timeless scene. The vagaries of the weather, the location and the precise time of day: all factors that had to align to reveal the majesty of the Pointe Percée in this cloudy setting. When nature consented to unveil this spectacle, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. Every detail - the shape of the hole, the shape of the ridge, the light tension between sun and shadow - conspired to reveal the strength and grace of this legendary mountain.
For me, this fleeting moment has become both a visual legacy and a testament to the transformative power of high mountains. Here, the Pointe Percée stands like an immutable sentinel, immersed in a sea of mist, facing Mont Blanc draped in light. A face-to-face encounter with the summit, where altitude no longer stands in the way of contemplation, and where the very essence of mountaineering is found in a simple glance exchanged between two peaks.
