Rimpfischhorn
Glacial set in the sun
About the work
In the foreground of the photograph lies the Mellichgletscher, the sumptuous glacier that man must tread if he is to reach the Rimpfischsattel pass, at 3988 meters above sea level. A further 200 metres of ascent are required to reach the mountain's summit . A perilous expedition, as the slopes are steep and air is scarce.
In this gentle yet powerful work, I wanted to highlight the impressive ridge of the Rimpfischhorn. The succession of its gendarmes, which parade against the sky in honor of the Grand Gendarme, the ultimate bastion. While its brothers are made of unstable rock, characteristic of the ridges that criss-cross the Valais Alps, it rises from a single block. A monumental pillar that marks the climax of an unforgettable ascent.
As the storm moves on, the mountain reveals its glacial finery. A superb landscape, thought to be eternal, yet irrevocably evolving. Resplendent in the sunlight, the Rimpfischhorn invites us to discover its age-old history. From its accumulated ice to the folds of its rocks. I'm moved by the detail in this work of art. See how the gendarmes forming its crest are transformed into a sundial by the projection of their shadows on the face of summit. Can you guess what time I took this shot? Tick tock, the clock is ticking and, looking at it like this, the mountain intoxicates you. Your mind wanders around its contours. Suddenly, the verticality of the shadows illuminates you. Yes, it's 11:20 a.m. when I immortalize this exceptional panorama. The pleasure of art in search of the splendors of the high mountains as an intimate truth.
