Matterhorn
Silver Majesty
About the work
At the center of the image, the Hörnli ridge rubs shoulders with light and shadow. Opened by Edward Whymper in 1865, it is the easiest route to summit. Given the verticality of this ridge, which outlines the immensity of the Matterhorn, it's hard to imagine climbing it. At the bottom of the photo is the Hörnli hut, and you can see the Solvay bivouac along the ridge. Tiny traces of man lost in the infinite grandeur of the mountains.
I took this vertical photograph of the Matterhorn in 2022, after a summer that was hard on the glaciers. The Matterhorn Glacier has new crevasses every year and is constantly retreating. As a mountain photographer, I'm torn between my sadness at witnessing the inevitable disappearance of such masterpieces of nature and my artistic excitement at seeing so much renewed beauty. For the evolution of glaciers, as they break away from the ground, amplifies the grandeur of summits. And that's the whole point of my testimonial. To immortalize nature's most beautiful creations and highlight the celestial presence of the high mountains. In this work, I've chosen to express this through contrasts Soft. The silvery tones underline the serene power of the Matterhorn through the subdued light.
