Strahlhorn
Tempestuous ascent
About the work
I shot this portrait of the Strahlhorn in 2017, when a violent storm hit the region. Between 40 and 60 cm of snow covered the mountain that night. I was in my tent, hoping that the landscape would be reborn in the morning. At daybreak, the sky parted to make way for the mountains. But the clouds were still present. A soft, yet powerful light illuminates the Strahlhorn. It highlights the beauty of its contours and its imposing stature. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I catch sight of some brave climbers determined to brave the still heavy skies. The deep track they are digging in the immaculate snow gives us a glimpse of the path that will lead them to summit. Next their progress with my eyes, I wait until the position of the roped parties is in harmony with the mountain before taking my photograph. And the scene is immortalized!
This view of the Strahlhorn will appeal to all climbers who have had the good fortune to set foot on summit. Can you make out the first team? They're about to reach the end of their journey. Reaching the cross perched at the top of the mountain, climbers can admire the splendor of the white-clad rock giant. A precious reward after battling the winds and overcoming the thick layer of snow that stood in their way. That morning, they and I experienced an awe-inspiring yet fleeting moment. For nature only reveals its purity for the duration of a breath. I'm happy to share this unique moment with you through this photograph.
