Theodulgletscher
Polar Light
About the work
December 28, 2017. Night falls. The world lives to the rhythm of the festivities. Lights shine in the valley and the mountain falls asleep. I'm alone up there, with my companion. A bitter cold devours us. Minus 20°C. We've taken refuge in the Gandegghütte, 3028 meters above sea level. Huddled under the blankets, we wait. The last rays of sunshine give way to an increasingly intense cold. My photographic equipment becomes difficult to handle. My camera refuses to focus, my tripod starts to freeze. But there it is, the light that attracts me. It reflects off the crevasses and sculpts the glacier. An enchanted image that I must capture. So I go. I try my luck. To capture this light, I take long exposures, my camera fixed on its tripod. And there it was, the photograph I'd been dreaming of. Fascinating beauty born of the fusion of elements. The soul of the Unterer Theodulgletscher finally revealed. With contrasts of Soft and silver, the picture highlights its crevasses. Carried by exceptional graphics, the work tells the thousand-year-old story of this ice giant.
