About the work
In this black-and-white portrait, the Weisshorn reveals a rarely-seen presence. It's midsummer. The mountain is dry, but bathed in brilliant light. The striking contrasts on this mountain captivated me. The hues of the rock resemble those of the snow. It was up to me to capture this moment of evanescence, this absolute purity, where the rock reveals its softness rather than its ferocity. And yet, an intensity emanates from this work, revealing the mountain in all its majesty.
I love this portrait, which shows the subtleties of the summit. With the gendarme on the left, the Weisshorn seems to consist of a double summit. I contemplate this mountain with all my being, it inspires me deeply. The clouds draping the face leave us free to imagine the shape of the Weisshorn. Next the ridge is the gigantic cross at the summit. Feel the grandeur of this summit. What does it reveal about the high mountains? Between dream and reality, we lose ourselves in the immensity of this universe.
The clouds swirling around the summit breathe life into this photograph. Having climbed the Weisshorn myself, I remember arriving at the summit as the clouds intertwined at the summit. Visibility was poor that day and I could only see a few metres ahead. The mountain is the master, and I am its servant.
