The Zinalrothorn
Winter Emergence
About the work
I painted this picture at the end of winter. All day long, the mountain battled against the storm, buried under the clouds. I climbed the nearby summit in the middle of the day, hoping that the mountain would finally appear. Night was approaching and the cold was beginning to set in. A few more minutes and I would have had to go back down. Suddenly, the clouds parted. The Zinalrothorn, sublime and striking, suddenly emerged from the fog, more regal than ever in its immaculate coat of snow. The surrounding clouds give this portrait incredible depth. Graphic and intense, the painting brings out the emotions as the luminous mountain is reborn from the shadows. Nature offered me an exceptional work of art that evening. summit remained visible for only a few seconds, the time it took to take a shot. Then the curtain fell on this fabulous spectacle. A magical, ephemeral moment, quickly erased by the night. Still seized by emotion, I set off back down the valley. As the heat returned, I kept in mind the image of the majestic Zinalrothorn emerging for a few moments from a sea of clouds in a ghostly, Himalayan fashion.
